THE REFIT

In order to become the operating platform for the Extreme E Racing business The Saint Helena went through a very extensive refit at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Liverpool in the UK during 2020 and 2021. All main mechanical systems were overhauled or rebuilt including the main engines and generators. The main engines were converted to run on low sulphur fuel and all systems such as the air conditioning and sewage treatment plants were completely overhauled or renewed.

The ships cranes and hatches were rebuilt and all the original paint was stripped back to the bare metal before 480 separate steelwork jobs were carried out to bring the ship up to as near new condition as possible.

The ships Cargo holds and tanks were stripped and repainted and the exterior of the ship was then painted in the Extreme E colour scheme and equipped with two smart new 8 metre Brig VIP support boats.

The ships bridge was also totally re equipped with new equipment including the latest ECDIS electronic chart system and upgraded radar and monitoring equipment. The ship was also fitted with a new VSAT dome for communication whilst at sea.

All safety equipment and life rafts were completely overhauled and renewed. The interior of the ship was refitted throughout and the layout was improved to provide a better entertaining platform for Extreme E.
